Training for practitioners of disaster support for foreigners
Living in Japan, where natural disasters are a frequent concern, it is crucial to be well-prepared for emergencies, not only for our own safety, but also to be able to assist others in need. Last January, the Iwate International Association hosted an insightful event titled Training for Practitioners of Disaster Support for Foreigners. This session provided an opportunity for local residents, to understand how to effectively communicate and provide support during a disaster situation, particularly when language barriers are involved.
The first part of the training, was focused on the basic knowledge of weather information and how it relates to natural disasters. The lecture was delivered by the Morioka Regional Meteorological Observatory, offering valuable insights into the various weather conditions that may signal potential disasters. We learned key technical terms that are commonly used in weather forecasts, such as time segments, precipitation, wind, warnings, and typhoons. This knowledge is vital for understanding the meteorological aspects of disasters, especially when these terms are used in emergency alerts and forecasts. As international students, understanding these terms in both Japanese and English helps bridge the communication gap when we need to inform others or seek help.
The second part of the training was dedicated to English courses for disaster relief, led by Mr. William Faris of Polyglot JP LLC. This session taught us how to communicate disaster-related information clearly in English, focusing on how to explain specific weather events in a way that everyone, regardless of language proficiency, can understand. One key lesson was that a direct translation of weather-related phrases or warnings doesn't always work. We learned to rephrase and adapt our explanations to ensure the message was received correctly. Participants had the chance to discuss and practice based on various possible scenarios, such as the heavy snow in Aomori or the emergency warning issued in Kuji, which provided us with practical situations to enhance our communication skills. We also discussed how to respond appropriately to the needs of others during a disaster, ensuring that our reactions are not only informative but also helpful. In a disaster situation, we might not know the full extent of what is happening, but being able to remain calm and effectively communicate can make a significant difference.
As international students at Iwate University, we are especially vulnerable in a disaster situation due to language barriers and unfamiliarity with local systems. However, this training has equipped us with the knowledge and skills to be better prepared, not only to protect ourselves but also to assist others in need. By understanding meteorological information and being able to communicate in multiple languages, we can help ensure that both foreigners and locals stay informed and safe during a crisis.
Last Friday, a significant earthquake occurred in Thailand. This training proved to be an invaluable experience, one that we may be able to apply upon our return to our home country, further emphasizing the importance of disaster preparedness. It served as a reminder that, in times of crisis, our responsibilities extend beyond our safety to support those around us. By preparing ourselves and honing our ability to communicate effectively, we can make a crucial difference when disaster strikes.
