New Year Decorations in Japan (日本の正月飾り)

During the Japanese New Year, pots decorated with fresh pine and bamboo are commonly seen at the entrances of homes and shops. Has anyone noticed these pots while walking around Morioka during this time? These decorations are part of a longstanding tradition to welcome the New Year's deity, Toshigami-sama in Shinto, and to invite happiness and prosperity into the home.

The Japanese New Year home decorating practice is known as the "New Year's Home Decorating Tradition." The decorations are meant to serve as a home for the deity, called "Yorishiro" (依り代), symbolizing an invitation for the god to enter. Three key decorations are typically seen during this time:

Kadomatsu (門松): A decorative arrangement of pine and bamboo, often placed in front of the door. The bamboo is cut diagonally and wrapped with straw, while pine branches are added to symbolize life, longevity, and prosperity. Kadomatsu signals the arrival of Toshigami-sama and invites blessings for the new year.

Shime Kazari (しめ飾り): A sacred rope made from rice straw, often adorned with Daidai oranges, ferns, ears of rice, and white paper strips. This decoration is placed above doorways to allow the New Year's deity to pass through the house.

Kagami Mochi (鏡餅): A stack of mochi, traditionally placed on a stand as an offering to the New Year's deity. It is believed that eating Kagami Mochi with family on January 11th, during "Kagami Biraki" (鏡開き), will grant strength and blessings for the year ahead.

In modern times, many Japanese people begin decorating their homes after Christmas, around December 26-27. December 28th is also seen as an auspicious day, as the character for eight (八) symbolizes an opening to the future. The period for displaying New Year's decorations, known as "Matsu no Uchi" (松の内), lasts from January 1-7. After this time, the decorations are burned in the "Sagijo" (左義長) festival, a ritual to send the New Year's deity back to the heavens. The Sagijo festival may be called different names in various regions; for example, in Morioka, it is called "Donto Yaki" or "Tondo Yaki."
