"Yuki Akari in Nishiwaga" is a winter event held in Nishiwaga Town, Iwate Prefecture. Many lights glowing in the snow gently illuminate the town. Ritt, an international student from Thailand, told us his impressions. Please take a look!

As winter nears its end, did you enjoy the winter so far? For me, one of the highlights was an unforgettable trip in early February with friends to the Yukiakari Festival in Nishiwaga. This celebration beautifully showcases the creativity of the local community.

Nestled to the south of Morioka, Nishiwaga Town experiences heavy and frequent snowfall due to its location near a mountain range. The snow piles up high, and the cold can be intense, but the residents of this town have turned the harsh winter conditions into a canvas for their artistry. The streets were lined with over 50 unique snow sculptures, each one decorated with glowing candles that shone brightly against the snow-covered backdrop. The result was a magical winter wonderland, with each piece of art reflecting the creativity and spirit of the townspeople.

As we walked through the town, admiring the snow art, we were also greeted by the kindness of the locals. Some had set up tables along the route, offering warm amazake and pickles to keep us warm during our stroll. It was a simple yet thoughtful gesture that added warmth to the chilly evening and highlighted the festival's community spirit. The festival concluded with a breathtaking fireworks display, lighting up the dark sky and providing the perfect end to an already unforgettable experience. The sight of fireworks against the snowy landscape was nothing short of spectacular, leaving a lasting impression on all of us.

The Yukiakari Festival taught me that no matter how cold or snowy the weather may be, the cooperation and creativity of a community can transform challenging conditions into something beautiful. The festival not only added color and life to the town but also attracted visitors from outside the area, offering a glimpse into the heart of Nishiwaga.

As a student at Iwate University, I've come to realize that stepping outside the city and immersing myself in local cultures through festivals like this one is a truly enriching experience. It opens up the world in ways that are both educational and inspiring. The Yukiakari Festival in Nishiwaga was one such experience, and I will always treasure the memories it created.
