Morioka Sansa Odori Festival: A Mesmerizing Experience

Written By: Tabassum Hasnat Reshmi (5.9.2022)

In the Tohoku region, one of the greatest festivals is Morioka Sansa Odori Festival which is 4 days long program starts from August 1 to August 4. In this month of August, I was fortunate that I enjoyed the festival. Many educational institute groups including Iwate University have participated in this colorful festival. Because over 10,000 taiko drummers and dancers took part Sansa is listed as the greatest taiko drum festival in the Guinness Book of Records in 2014.

It is mainly a massive parade event performed by a large number of groups of people dancing in sync with taiko drummers, flute players, and people chanting. The main procession of the festival mainly takes place on Chuodori street which is near Morioka City Hall from 6 pm to 9 pm.

I was excited to see the festival as this was my first time in Morioka. When I reached the venue, there were many Sansa dancing groups of men, women and children of all ages. All were looking so fresh wearing Japanese traditional dress "Yukata", summer type of Kimono. The vibrate design and color of the dress added a festive mood for all. I really like the hairstyle of the Japanese girls because the flowers on their hair. I wish I could wear Kimono someday and make the hairstyle!

The main parade started around 6 pm and there were lots of people gathered to enjoy the event. For me, the dance steps are really critical but all the participants did it perfectly. The dynamic drumming and the rhythmical flute playing with the beautiful dancing people added extra color to the summer of Morioka. It reminds me of the Bangla New Year Festival in Bangladesh. These two countries are different in culture but the colorful environment and enjoyment of people are the same.
